Working with free, discarded construction materials, the intention was to build an insulated environment in which to examine my ephemeral urge to create then discard in favor of the next great idea, against the notion of the monumental epitaph. Through the removal of external stimuli, the focus and my energy would be channeled toward a refinement of idea. The conflicting sense of freedom and restraint excited , as did the theoretical concept of a constructed " Garret " which shielded me from any art influences. Symbolism in its minimal state was the expected outcome.
I did not initially see this as a work of art in its own right. There are elements of materiality, sculptural form and action jarring against each other, creating a multi facet work that is at odds with itself and the surroundings.
Elements of this work were developed and refined as the year progressed. |
